Handball Regional League West 1996/97
The 1996/1997 season of the men 's regional handball league was the 27th in its history. A total of 24 teams in a north and a south relay played for the West German championship. The four best-placed teams of their season played for the title of West German champion in 1997 after 22 match days. This was achieved by TV Angermund .
Five teams had to relegate to the upper leagues: HSV Versmold (Westphalia), SC Bielefeld (Westphalia), TV Oppum (Lower Rhine), HSG Siebengebirge-Thomasberg and TuS Daun (Middle Rhine). In addition, Pulheimer SC (Mittelrhein) withdrew its team for the next season.
SpVg Versmold becomes HSV Versmold .
