János Váradi (born February 28, 1961 in Kemecse , Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg ) is a former Hungarian boxer . Váradi was a bronze medalist at the 1980 Olympic Games and the 1986 World Championships, and a silver medalist at the 1983 , 1987 and 1989 European Championships .

Career

In the junior division (U19), Váradi was bronze medalist at the 1979 World Championships and 1980 European Champion.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Váradi reached the semifinals in the flyweight (-51 kg) after victories over Rabiraj Thapa, Nepal (RSC 1st), and Daniel Radu, Romania (4: 1 ). In this he faced the later silver medalist Viktor Miroschnitschenko , Soviet Union , to whom he was defeated by 4: 1 judges' votes and thus eliminated from the tournament with a bronze medal.

In 1981 he was eliminated at the European Championships in the quarter-finals, but in 1983 he reached the final, which he lost to Petar Lessow , Bulgaria (5-0). In 1984 Váradi started because of the Olympic boycott of his country in the friendship competitions in Havana and won a bronze medal.

In 1985 he failed at the European Championships in the quarter-finals, at the World Championships in the following year he reached the semi-finals, which he lost to Pedro Orlando Reyes, Cuba (4-1). At the European Championships in 1987 , Váradi again won a silver medal. In the final he lost to Andreas Tews , DDR (5-0). Against this he was eliminated from the 1988 Olympic Games in the round of 16.

Váradi won his last international medal in 1989 at the European Championships . After reaching the final, he lost in this prematurely against Yuri Arbachakov , Soviet Union (RSC 3rd). The world championships in the same year ended for him in the round of 16 against Arbachakov.

In 1990 Váradi became a professional. He ended his career in 1991 after five fights without having won a title.
