50 km walk
50-km- Go (English: 50 km race walking ) is a track and field competition for men and women, which will be held on road routes and since 1932 the program of the Olympic Games belongs (except 1976 ). 50 km walking is the longest Olympic discipline in athletics.
When walking, in contrast to running, there must always be ground contact, at least without any interruption that is visible to the human eye. In addition, the walker must keep the front leg straight from touching the ground to reaching the vertical position. These regulations are monitored by the judges during the competition. If a violation is found, the referee requests the disqualification of the walker concerned. The number of disqualification requests made for the participants (by different judges) is noted on a board that is visible to all at the edge of the course. If three (or more) judges have made disqualification requests for an athlete, he will be disqualified, of which he will be informed by showing a red trowel. In addition, the referees have the opportunity as often as they like to indicate to an athlete an uncleanness in his walking style by showing a yellow trowel with a corresponding symbol (angle in the case of insufficient knee extension, tilde (wave) in the case of insufficient ground contact), which is, however, not yet big enough for one Disqualification request to point out.
The best 50 km walkers achieve times of 3:40 hours (world record: 3:32:33 h), which corresponds to a speed of 3.78 m / s or 13.63 km / h.
For many years, 50 km walking was one of the few disciplines in athletics that was only contested by men. In 2016 the IAAF decided that from 2017 women’s competitions will also be held over this distance. So there was both the world championships in 2017 and at the European Championships in 2018 and the World Championships in 2019 a woman competition in this discipline. There are plans to host the 2020 Olympic Games .
The same route is also conducted as a track competition and then referred to as the 50,000-meter walk.
