Yevgeny Ivanovich Maskinskov

Yevgeny Ivanovich Maskinskow ( Russian: Евгений Иванович Маскинсков, born December 19, 1930 , † January 25, 1985 ) was a track and field athlete who competed for the Soviet Union. In 1958 he was European champion in the 50 km walk .

Life

In 1956 he set his personal best with 4:08:57 hours. At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , however, his compatriot Grigori Klimow was the favorite, who had improved the world best time to 4:05:13 hours in August. Klimow gave up in the Olympic final, while Maskinskow was able to hold onto the top together with the Swede John Ljunggren and the Italian Abdon Pamich . Gold, however, was won by an outsider, Norman Read from New Zealand . Maskinskow won silver in 4: 32: 57.0 hours, 2 minutes behind Read, ahead of Ljunggren and Pamich.

In 1958 at the European Championships in Stockholm Maskinskow went from the start in the leading group. Already at the 20 kilometer mark he was alone in the lead and held out to the finish. He won in 4: 17: 15.4 hours with three quarters of a minute ahead of Pamich, third was Max Weber .
