Paralepa (German Paralep ) is a village ( Estonian alevik ) in the municipality Haapsalu (until 2017: rural municipality Ridala ) in Lääne County in Estonia .

Population and location

The lower lighthouse of Paralepa now stands in the area of the village of Kiltsi

The place has 306 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located immediately southwest of the core town of Haapsalu.

The Baltic Sea beach of Paralepa, which extends as far as Haapsalu, is a popular holiday resort. The sea is on average two to three degrees warmer than on the other beaches.

The settlement was established in 1977 when two villages were merged with the Soviet military settlement Panfilowo to form an administrative unit. Until 1993 there was an almost eight square kilometer airfield of the Soviet Air Force at the place .

Boulder

In the forest of Paralepa there is a boulder that is under nature protection. Its circumference is 16.7 m. He bears the name Suur Kivi ("Big Stone") or Peetrikivi ("Petersstein"). Legend has it that Tsar Peter I overturned his carriage during a visit there in 1715. Instead of a penalty, however, the driver received a tip.
