In 1539 the Nienhaus farm of the bishops of Ösel-Wiek was first mentioned in a document. During the Swedish rule over Estonia it belonged to the De la Gardie family from 1628 to 1691 .

The last private owner of the farm before it was expropriated as part of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was Princess Eugenie Schachowskoi-Glebow-Streschnew (1841–1924, born von Brevern).

From 1921 a teachers' seminar was housed in the manor house. In 1932 the facility was placed under the Estonian Ministry of Defense. From 1940 to 1944 the property was used as an agricultural school. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, a military base of the Red Army was housed there.

Instead of the old wooden manor house, a two-storey new stone building was erected in the style of late classicism in 1833 . From 1921 to 1923 it was redesigned for the purposes of the teachers' college according to plans by the Estonian architect Karl Burman (the elder; 1882–1965). The dilapidated east wing was renovated and a new west wing was added. Today there is a kindergarten and a primary school in the manor house.

The 7.5 hectare park of the estate near the Baltic Sea coast is now under state protection.
