Rohuküla (German Rohho , Swedish Rus ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian municipality Haapsalu (until 2017: rural municipality Ridala ) in Lääne County . It has 51 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

Rohuküla is located directly on the Baltic Sea , seven kilometers southwest of the core city of Haapsalu. Within the Municipality of the uninhabited island belongs Rukkirahu (German Rukki ) with its leading lights .

history

Rohuküla was first mentioned as the landing site in 1208 under the name Rokel . The place has been proven as a village since 1524 ( dorp Rhuesz ). Swedish-speaking farmers lived there during the Middle Ages .

port

The port of Rohuküla was expanded into a naval port by the tsarist army during the First World War . Today it is only in operation as a trading and passenger port.

Ferries run from Rohuküla via Väinameri to the West Estonian islands of Hiiumaa ( Heltermaa port ) and Vormsi ( Sviby port ). In winter, vehicles can reach the islands via the frozen Baltic Sea on a marked car route.
