history
The place was initially called Los Llanitos . On April 12, 1947, the Michoacán State Congress decided to found the Melchor Ocampo del Balsas community . The city was renamed Lázaro Cárdenas in 1970 in honor of the former President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río .

The seaport of Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas is the deepest Mexican port with an area of over 2500 hectares and a depth of 16.5 m. He is considered to be the central link between the drug producers in South America and the markets in the north. Various cartels fought bloody battles there in the Mexican drug war . On November 4, 2013, the Navy took control of the port in this context. 50 city police officers were temporarily detained on suspicion of working with the drug cartels , and the customs officers were also replaced.
