Hellfried Heilfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hellfried Heilfort (born April 10, 1955 in Groitzsch ) is a former German sports shooter . He won an Olympic silver medal with the small bore rifle in 1980.

Sports career

Heilfort found shooting sports through his brother. He started for the GST shooting club in Leipzig. In 1972 he won the Spartakiade , in 1976 he won his first GDR championship title in a three-position battle. After Heilfort had become East German champion again in 1979, he started at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow in both small-caliber disciplines. In the competition from the lying position, the Hungarian Károly Varga and Heilfort achieved the world record of 599 rings. Varga had shot a 9 in the second series, Heilfort in the penultimate series; according to the rule that the last hit decides, Varga won the gold medal and Heilfort received silver. Two days later, Heilfort took seventh place in the three-position battle. Heilfort won two more GDR titles in the three-position battle in 1984 and 1986, and in 1984 he won his only title from the lying position. Heilfort ended his career when he had no successes in the newly introduced final competitions in the late 1980s.
