Matthias Liebers (born November 22, 1958 in Leipzig ) is a former soccer player and soccer coach. He played for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga and for VfB Leipzig in the Bundesliga . He is 59 times GDR national player and Olympic silver medalist in 1980.

Athletic career

From 1965 to 1968 Matthias Liebers played in the company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive Leipzig-Mitte. He then moved to the Leipzig soccer focus 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. As a junior player he was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team in 1975, with whom he played as a midfielder in 36 international matches until 1977, in which he scored 12 goals. In 1976 he became GDR junior champion with the juniors of 1. FC Lok. He came to his first league game at the age of 18 as a substitute in the 46th minute on the last game day of the 1976/77 season. Liebers became a regular player in the league team of 1. FC Lok in the 1978/79 season, in which he played 24 of the 26 point games as a midfielder and scored three goals. At the same time he became a member of the GDR youth national team , for which he played 19 international matches between 1978 and 1983 (2 goals). By the end of the last GDR league season (1990-1991) Liebers was called up in a total of 321 point games and scored 37 goals. He was used 57 times in the games for the GDR soccer cup and won the cup competition in 1986 (5-1 over 1. FC Union Berlin ) and 1987 (4-1 over Hansa Rostock ). In addition, Liebers played 43 games in the various European Cup competitions, in 1987 he advanced to the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup Ajax Amsterdam - 1. FC Lok (1-0).

On October 8, 1980 Liebers played his first international match in the friendly game Czechoslovakia - GDR (0-1), in which he was also used in midfield. By 1987 he had made 59 international appearances with four goals. With the GDR Olympic selection , he played all six games at the 1980 Olympic Games , although he was only a substitute. In the final against Czechoslovakia (0-1), he was only substituted on in the 81st minute.

From 1991 to 1996 Liebers played 25 Bundesliga games with VfB Leipzig in the 1993/1994 season and 74 games in the 2nd Bundesliga . He let his career come to an end at FC Grün-Weiß Wolfen (1996-1997), FV Zeulenroda (1997-1998) and played for SV Blau-Weiß 90 Neustadt until the end . In the 2004/05 season he played two games for the re-established 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in the 3rd district class and scored one goal.

From 2005 to 2011 he coached SV Blau-Weiß Neustadt. In the 2009/2010 season he confidently led the Neustädter from the regional class east to promotion to the regional league Thuringia . From 2011 to 2016 Liebers coached VfL 06 Saalfeld . Since October 2016 he has been training the 1st team of SG FC Motor Zeulenroda , which has been playing in the national class, season 1 in Thuringia since 2012.
