FDGB Cup 1986/87
In 1986/87 the 36th edition of the FDGB men 's soccer cup was held. The competition started with 65 teams, 15 district cup winners, 34 teams from the GDR league , two league relegated teams each from the 1985/86 season and the league teams of the current season. The system of home and away matches from the round of 16, introduced in 1984, was abolished and all pairings were decided within one match. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes, the game was extended and a penalty shoot-out was carried out if necessary.
In the second main round, six league clubs were eliminated, including the old and new GDR champions BFC Dynamo . In contrast, KWO Berlin was the only district cup winner to make it into the last eight, plus seven teams from the second-rate GDR league. With Sachsenring Zwickau , Chemie Leipzig and Hansa Rostock , three GDR league players also reached the quarter-finals. From them, Hansa Rostock even made it into the final and met cup defender 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , who won the cup for the fifth time with a 4-1 victory after his tenth final appearance.

Course of the game
The cup defender 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig went into the 36th final as the clear favorite. He came to East Berlin with the recommendation of third in the league season 1986/87 and as a finalist of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1987 (0-1 against Ajax Amsterdam). There were six current national players in its ranks. His opponent, FC Hansa Rostock, had been relegated to the second-rate GDR league last season and went into the final as a league promoted player. Only Jarohs had experience from international matches, but his last appearance was five years ago. The team carried the memory with them that they had always left the pitch as a loser in their four previous finals.
A few minutes after kick-off, this distribution of roles was no longer noticeable. Out of a flexible and supple defense, the Hanseatic tried to attack the opponent with counter-football. The Leipzigers, on the other hand, began too slowly and with numerous bad passports. When Röhrich's violent shot narrowly missed the Leipzig goal in the 10th minute, it was FC Hansa's first crazy shot. Nine minutes later, the Rostock Vorstopper Alms had the next chance. 1. FC Lok had still not found their game, their midfield was too passive. Consequently, the opening goal for Rostock fell in the 21st minute. After a foul by Zötzsche on the Rostock Kruse, Jarohs lifted the free kick in front of the goal, where March could complete with a header. What could have given the Hanseatic people security became a wake-up call for the locomotive crew. Almost in return, one minute later, left winger Kühn managed to equalize with a header from right-back Lindner, also with a header. After that, the flow of the game picked up pace, and both teams had more goal opportunities until the break.
After the restart, Lok Leipzig initially fell into lethargy again. Only after a remarkable volley shot in the 58th minute by Kühn, who achieved the 2-1 lead, Lok picked up speed again. The team began to combine fluently, the midfield was now in top form. Eight minutes later, in the 66th minute, a header from the Leipzig right winger Marschall on Scholz's cross brought the preliminary decision with the 3-1. In order to save the game, the Rostockers then switched to permanent pressure. Since Lok failed to close the rooms, Hansa always had a chance to hit the next goal. All of their efforts were ruined in the 88th minute when the substitute Leitztke scored the 4-1 for 1. FC Lok.
