Uwe Zötzsche (born September 15, 1960 in Zwenkau ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga ( 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig ) and in the 2nd French league ( Racing Strasbourg ). With Lok Leipzig he was three times GDR Cup winner . Zötzsche played 38 times in the GDR national team .

Soccer career

Club player

Zötzsche started at BSG Motor Eythra in 1968 . At the age of ten he moved to BSG Chemie Leipzig and in 1974 joined 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. After he had played in the youth team in 1978/79, he was included as a defender in the squad of the league team for the 1979/80 season. Zötzsche, who is still in training to become an electrician, made his first league debut on matchday 3, August 29, 1979, when he came on in the 15th minute of the match between Rot-Weiß Erfurt and 1. FC Lok (1: 2) has been. In his first league season, the 1.85 m tall defender made 20 league appearances and remained a regular in the Lok team until 1988. He celebrated his greatest successes in the GDR soccer cup . In all three cup wins by Lok Leipzig - 1981, 1986 and 1987 - he was in the final team.

He made himself immortal for the locomotive fans in the 1986/87 European Cup Winners' Cup at the semi-final second leg against Girondins Bordeaux on April 22, 1987 in the Leipzig Central Stadium: In the 108th minute, Zötzsche missed a penalty. During its last two seasons in Leipzig, 1988/89 and 1989/90, it was only used 11 and 17 times respectively. In his eleven-year league time Zötzsche played for 1. FC Lok in 243 league point games, played 39 national and 34 European cup games. In these 316 competitive games he scored 65 goals as a regular defender.

In 1990 Zötzsche moved to the 2nd French league for Racing Strasbourg for one season and played 29 games there. In the summer of 1991 he returned to Germany and played one year for KSV Hessen Kassel in the Oberliga Hessen . From 1992 to 1994 Zötzsche was at 1. FC Markkleeberg . He then became a recreational footballer with the district division VfB Zwenkau 02 .

Selection player

Zötzsche played with the youth national team of the GDR 21 and with the GDR youth national team 8 international matches. From 1982 he was part of the senior squad of the GDR . There he came on April 14, 1982 in Leipzig in the friendly game GDR - Italy (1-0) as a left defender for his first international match. By 1988 he was used in 38 international matches and scored five goals. In 1983 and 1984 Zötzsche was part of the GDR's football team , with which he played seven qualifying games.
