Course of the game

Reinhard Häfner, shooter to make it 2-0

In the 33rd FDGB Cup final, the newly crowned GDR champions BFC Dynamo and the runner-up Dynamo Dresden met. Both teams went into the game emotionally charged: after two unsuccessful attempts, the BFC wanted to win the double champion and cup winner in the third attempt, the Dresdeners were looking for compensation for the 2-4 point defeat against the BFC two weeks ago, which had cost them the championship . In addition, the two most dangerous teams of the past league season faced each other, the BFC had achieved an average of 2.5 goals, Dresden had come to 2.3 goals per game.

The encounter was correspondingly dramatic. Dresden coach Sammer had set his team on total offensive, offered three strikers and an attacking midfield and let the trained striker Döschner play in defense. At BFC, coach Bogs relied entirely on his top scorer Ernst and the strong back four in midfield. As planned, the Dresden team immediately took the initiative and had already forced three corners after five minutes. In the 8th minute, Troppa had to hit a shot from Dresden's Stübner off the line. But the BFC was able to counter it with precise advances, Ernst and the young Prange forced Jakubowski and Dörner to make brilliant parades. In the hectic pace of the game, there were also several chances to score through mistakes by the opponents, so when in the 20th minute Ernst brought the Dresden mushroom into a favorable shooting position and shortly afterwards Dresden's Trautmann gave his opponent Ernst a template.

Numerous crossbar and post shots as well as good-humored goalkeepers on both sides prevented a goal for a long time, despite the continuous exchange of blows. At the break, both coaches agreed that whoever scores the first goal wins the game. This prognosis came true late. In the 81st minute, the Dresden captain Dörner took over the execution of a free kick, 30 meters away from the goal. Rudwaleit surprised his sharp shot past the wall, it was 1-0 for Dynamo Dresden. In the ensuing furious attacks by the BFC, the knockout blow fell two minutes later. Lippmann had played his way into the Berlin penalty area after a remarkable solo, Terletzki could only illegally prevent him from shooting on goal. Seasoned Häfner did not miss the chance and converted with a concentrated shot to 2-0. Although Troppa scored the next goal after another two minutes and his teammates fought sacrificially to equalize until the final whistle, Dynamo Dresden was able to save its narrow lead over time.
