The 1957 FDGB soccer cup was the seventh edition of this competition. He started with 24 teams of the third-class II. GDR League and 120 cup quarter-finalists from the cup competitions in 1956 in the 15 GDR districts. All cup rounds were played in the knockout system, the games of which were decided in the event of a tie after regular time by overtime and, if necessary, by a repeat game.

After two qualifying rounds, teams started the 1st main round in early May 1964, in which the 14 upper division and 14 teams of the first GDR league intervened. In the round of 16, four district league teams and one team each from the 2nd and 1st GDR leagues were represented. Of the lower-class teams, only the district league team Chemie Bitterfeld reached the quarter-finals and only lost 3-0 to SC Lok Leipzig in the replay . Already in the first main round, the Bitterfelder had thrown the defending champion SC Chemie Halle-Leuna 2-1 after extra time from the competition.

The final on December 22nd in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) was reached by the 7th of the Oberliga SC Lok Leipzig and the Oberliga climber SC Empor Rostock . While it was the first finals for the favored league club Leipzig, the Rostockers were in the cup final for the second time after their defeat in 1955.

Course of the game

The seventh final of the FDGB Cup, which was played in freezing cold shortly before Christmas, met with little response with 6000 spectators. It was a negative record in the history of the GDR Cup so far, also caused by the venue, which is far away for the Rostock supporters. The game Oberliga-Siebter (Lok Leipzig) against Oberliga climbers (Empor Rostock) was not very attractive for the Karl-Marx-Städter audience. In this regard, however, the course of the game proved otherwise. Despite the soft and slippery ground, both teams showed a technically high-class game, in which there was no lack of drama.

The second-rate Rostockers never played like an outsider until the end. Lok Leipzig showed the technically better football, but was in great danger several times due to the fast moves of the uplift team. Although the Leipziger fought numerous corners, they could not put their opponent in serious danger for a long time. On the other hand, Rostock's fast strikers caused a stir in front of the Leipziger Tor. In particular, the technically well-versed Speth caused a stir with his fast sprints from the back area. Nevertheless, the Rostock played too wide, exaggerated the short-pass game and neglected the wing game. On the other hand, director Dieter Fischer was not able to give the Leipzig game any impact. So the first half ended goalless after a technically pleasing but not consistently led game.

After the break, Lok Leipzig first showed that they were willing to bring more pressure into the game, coach Wittenbecher swapped Fischer for Konzack. In cooperation with Heinz Fröhlich, he immediately ensured more urgent actions. However, the first goal was scored by SC Empor in the 53rd minute through an exemplary combination of its best strikers Speth and Bialas. First, Bialas brought Speth into shooting position, but his shot landed on the post. In the follow-up, the Bialas who was running with him could volley the ball under the bar. Even before that, the Leipziger Brandt had only been able to stop Zedel at the last moment after a ball relay over five Rostockers. With the help of the improved storm game, SC Lok managed to equalize after five minutes through Schoppe. After that, both teams were no longer able to bring about the decision within regular time.

In the extension, Speth initially had the opportunity to take the lead again. After a remarkable solo effort, he shot sharply at the near corner, but afterwards goalkeeper Busch managed to get the ball under control. A little later, the injured Speth had to be replaced by Levknecht, which led to a considerable weakening of the Rostock Sturmspiel. This gave Lok Leipzig the upper hand, Rostock's defense was no longer relieved. After only twelve minutes in extra time, a handball in the penalty area of the Rostock central defender Zapf led to the game decision, two minutes later Fröhlich converted the penalty to 2-1 for the Leipzig Lok team. The now slackened Rostockers were no longer able to turn the game around.

Leipzig's coach Wittenbecher admitted after the game: “We couldn't get along with the Rostock system in the first half.” Coach Krügel from SC Empor said: “It was a memorable cup final, on a good level. My players were able to convince especially in the first half, then the meeting was even. ”(Quotes from fuwo No. 52/57).
