Werner Walther (born July 18, 1928 ) was a football player in the GDR . In the top division of GDR football , the Oberliga , he played for BSG Chemie Leipzig and SC Lokomotive Leipzig . He won the cup in 1957 with the SC Lok. Walther played an international match for the GDR B national team.

Football career

After the end of the Second World War, Walther began to play football at SG Markkleeberg . There he was last active in 1952 in the third-class district league Leipzig . On November 2, 1952, Walther moved to the GDR upper division chemistry Leipzig, where he was used as a center forward by coach Otto Westphal a week later . However, Walther only moved up to the starting eleven when seven regular players were poached by league rivals Vorwärts Leipzig in the winter of 1952 . In the second half of the 1952/53 season he played as a right winger all 18 point games and came in his first league season on a total of 24 missions. In 1953/54 he was absent from the first four league games, but was then used in 22 point games by the new coach Alfred Kunze .

When the Lokomotive Leipzig sports club was founded in September 1954, its soccer section took over most of the BSG Chemie players, including Werner Walther. He kept his position on the right attacking side and played in the season 1954/55 22 of the 26 played point games. With his eight goals he was the best shooter in his team. In autumn 1954 he was appointed to the B national team and played the B international match GDR - Bulgaria (0-0) on October 24, 1954 as a right winger.

In the following seasons, Walther did not manage to play a full season. While in the transition round 1955 (change from summer-spring game calendar to calendar year rhythm) and the seasons 1956 and 1957 a total of 65 point games were played in the league, Walther played only 43 games. However, he was again the top scorer of SC Lok in 1957 with eight goals and won the GDR soccer cup with the team after a 2-1 win after extra time over SC Empor Rostock. In the final on December 22, 1957 , Walther was used as the right winger in his home position. A year earlier, in 1956, he had already played two other international games with the Leipzig city selection in the European trade fair cup competition . In the two encounters against Lausanne-Sports (6: 3, 3: 7) he played one left wing and one half right attack and scored one goal in every game. In the 1958 season Walther played for the last time in the league. While he was used eight times in the first half of the season, he was then only used in two point games. So he had played 121 league games from 1952 to 1958 and scored 44 goals.

In 1970 Walther once again attracted international attention when he won the UEFA youth tournament , the unofficial European junior championship, with the GDR junior national team he was in charge of (drawing of lots after a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands).
