GDR football league 1956

The GDR Oberliga 1957 was the ninth edition of the top division of the GDR . The champion was SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt , which defended its championship title from the previous year. The season began on March 17, 1957 and ended on December 1, 1957.

Season course

The championship was characterized by the duel between the two dominant teams of the late 1950s, SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt and Vorwärts Berlin . The decision was made two game days before the end of the season, when Wismut won 1-0 in a direct duel in Berlin and was thus unmatched at the top of the table.

The decision about relegation was also made in a direct duel between two table neighbors. Before the last matchday, Lokomotive Stendal (eleventh with 22 points), Motor Zwickau (twelfth with 21 points) and Chemie Halle-Leuna (13th with 20 points) were in danger of relegation. On the last day of the match, Halle and Stendal played directly against each other. Stendal lost the game 3-0. Since Zwickau also won his game against Jena, Stendal was relegated together with Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt .

    International competitions

After the GDR Association had not sent a representative to the European Cup in the previous two years, Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt took part in 1957/58 . In the preliminary round, Wismut prevailed by tossing a coin in the playoff against Gwardia Warszawa . Before that, both teams had won 3: 1 against each other and played a 1: 1 draw in the decisive game that became necessary. In the first round, Ajax Amsterdam was too strong for the Saxons (they lost 1: 3 and 0: 1). All games took place in 1957.
