Athletic career

In the 1950s, three Gießler brothers played football together in Babelsberg. The most successful of the trio was Werner Gießler, named Gießler I in the reporting , with a total of 203 top games.

Werner Gießler's football career began after the Second World War with the Babelsberg sports club. With her he was Brandenburg runner- up in 1948 and won the championship in 1949. In both finals he was used as a half-left striker, but remained without a goal. Due to their placement in the Brandenburg state class, SG Babelsberg had also qualified for the East Zone Championships in 1948 and 1949 , but were eliminated after their first game. Both in the 1: 3 against SG Meerane in 1948 and in the 2: 3 defeat in 1949 against Meerane again, Gießler scored one goal each.

For the 1949/50 season, the East German sports committee founded the so-called DS-Liga as the highest football league , which was later called the GDR-Oberliga . The 14 qualified teams also included the Brandenburg champions, who competed at the start of the season as a company sports association (BSG) Märkische Volksstimme . Werner Gießler was part of the squad and established himself as a regular player with his 24 appearances in 26 point games. As a striker on the half left, he scored thirteen goals and was the team's top scorer. In the following two seasons, the BSG now entered the Babelsberg rotation, Gießler was absent only nine times in the 60 league games, but was consistently called up as a left-back in 1951/52. In 1952/53 he had to pause for a long time in the first half of the season and only made 18 games in 32 league games. After that, Giessler was a regular regular for the Babelsberg team for four seasons and missed a total of only seven league games. As a rule, he played again on the half-left side of the storm, but was occasionally used again in defense. Werner Gießler played his last league season in 1957 (calendar year season) at the age of 32. Up to the 16th matchday he was called up 14 times. After that he made 203 league appearances and was one of the Babelsberg scorers every season. Giessler scored a total of 61 league goals.

As a recreational footballer, Gießler was active at BSG Empor Potsdam until the 1960s, and later again at Rotation Babelsberg, when it played in the third-class GDR League II .
