The Kiel Society for Film Music Research was founded in 2006 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel by scholars from music and media studies.

The scientific society organizes annual meetings as well as additional international conferences on topics such as Jazz in Film (2011), Silent Film Sound (2013) or Music in TV Series (2015). The society publishes a freely accessible online journal, the Kiel contributions to film music research , which appears irregularly and has so far published 11 issues. Research results and contributions are also published as edited volumes.

The institute is an important institution for German-language film music research and has repeatedly and successfully promoted communication with representatives of film and musical practice at its symposia.
