GDR football league 1955

The GDR Oberliga 1956 was the eighth edition of the top division of the GDR . The champions were the SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt , who defended their (unofficial) championship title from the transition round of the previous year. The season began on March 11, 1956 and ended on October 28, 1956.

Before the season

The season was the first season after the game operations were switched to a year-round rhythm. The new schedule, which overlapped with the rhythm mostly played in Europe, meant that the championship team qualified for the European Cup, but could not take part until autumn of the following year (almost a year later).

Name change

The creation of performance support points through the establishment of the sports clubs (SC) had meanwhile been completed and was reflected in the composition of the league. Only three of the 14 top division clubs were still company sports associations (BSG). All other teams were already integrated into sports clubs. The BSG Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt was connected to the new SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt shortly before the start of the season . The climber from the 1954/55 season BSG Progress Weissenfels had already gone over to SC Progress Weissenfels before the start of the transition period .

In addition to the renaming already mentioned, ZSK Vorwärts Berlin also changed its name again. After the end of the major league season in 1956, the name was changed to ZASK Vorwärts Berlin (under this name they also took part in the cup final), before the beginning of the following season, ASK Vorwärts Berlin followed as the final name for the time being.

Season course

Bismut's captain Erhard Bauer receives the championship trophy , which was awarded for the first time.

After SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt had already performed very successfully in previous years (two times runner-up, one time cup winner) and won the unofficial championship of the transition round in 1955, the "real" championship followed in 1956. Only the SC Lokomotive Leipzig offered Wismut serious competition for a long time, but slipped into third place on the last match day. The provincial club activist Brieske-Senftenberg was runner -up , achieving the best result in its history. The newcomer of the 1954/55 season, Lokomotive Stendal , also caused a positive surprise with fourth place.

On the other hand, the season was disappointing for the two sports clubs Empor Rostock and Dynamo Berlin , which had been relocated from Saxony in 1954 with the aim of creating sporting bases in the capital and in the north. Both clubs were relegated, with Dynamo being deducted two points on the last day of the match due to the use of an unauthorized player, which otherwise would have meant relegation. Instead, the champions of the 1954/55 season Turbine Erfurt remained in the league as twelfth in the table , who still played a weak season.

A highlight of the season was the match between the two Leipzig teams Rotation and Lokomotive on September 8th in the newly built central stadium . The number of visitors of 100,000 is still the record number of spectators for soccer point games in Germany.
