Dieter Legler (born May 3, 1934 ; † March 2, 2003 ) was a German football player who was active in Dresden and East Berlin . He played for the BSG Rotation and the SC Einheit Dresden , for the SC Dynamo Berlin and for the SG Dynamo Dresden in the top division of football in the GDR , the Oberliga .

Athletic career

Legler's football career began as a young player in the football section of the company sports association (BSG) Rotation Dresden. From 1952 to 1955 he was part of the squad of the league team, which started in 1954 as SC unit Dresden. With her he completed 69 point games, in which he scored twelve goals as a striker. In 1956 Legler moved to SC Dynamo Berlin, the top club of the sports association for the internal security organs in the GDR, whose soccer team also played in the major league. There its development took an unfortunate course. On the one hand, he was only used in the last season's point game in the league team, and on the other hand, without official playing authorization, so that Dynamo Berlin two points were deducted. This led to relegation from the league, and Legler had to play for a year in the second division in 1957 before the Berliners managed to get promoted again immediately. In the following league season in 1958, Legler did not really get the chance and only completed seven first division games, he did not succeed in scoring.

1959 Legler returned to Dresden, but now joined the SG Dynamo. Their first team had just been promoted to the second-rate GDR league , and Legler finally managed to gain a foothold there. He developed into an accurate center forward and caused a sensation on matchday 11 in the encounter between Dynamo Dresden and Chemie Wolfen with six goals in an 8-1 victory. In the following seasons 1960 and 1961/62 he was top scorer in the GDR league with 18 and 28 goals. The high goal rate in 1961/62 is explained by the fact that 39 point games were played this season due to the change from the calendar game year to the summer-spring rhythm. This season Dynamo Dresden also made it to the top division. In the following league season Legler completed 22 of the 26 played point games and was again the top scorer of his team with seven goals. However, this could not ensure relegation, so Legler had to play again in the second division in 1963/64. He achieved immediate resurgence with Dynamo Dresden as well, but was now 30 years old. With Gumz , Ziegler and Siede , younger strikers had moved up, so that Legler was only used once on the first day of the season in the 1964/65 league season. At the end of the season he ended his active career. In his six years at Dynamo Dresden he was used in 140 league games, including 23 league games. With 85 goals he was the most successful goalscorer of his team in those years, in addition to his six goals in the Wolfen game in 1959, he was successful in another five point games with three goals each.

Dieter Legler died after a long and serious illness in March 2003 at the age of 68.
