The GDR Oberliga 1978/79 was the 30th edition of the top division of the GDR . The championship was for the first time the Berlin FC Dynamo , which marked the beginning of its ten years of dominance in GDR football. The season began on August 19, 1978 and ended on June 9, 1979.
Season course
The BFC won its first championship in a sovereign manner before the champions of previous years Dynamo Dresden and set many new records: The total score of 46: 6 was the highest point average (1.77 per game) that has ever been achieved in the major league only achieved again by the BFC itself (1982/83). The 75 goals scored in 26 games were up to then the second-best goal average (2.88 per game) in the history of the league (behind SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt with 3.35 goals per game in the 1949/50 season) and was in the After that, the BFC itself only outbid it once again in the 1984/85 season (3.46 goals per game). The only defeat of the season was against Magdeburg on the 23rd match day - this was also unmatched until then.
For the Berliners it was the first of a total of ten consecutive championship titles. The second-placed Dresdner, on the other hand, experienced their first untitled season after three successful seasons. The following decade was marked by the duel between the two Dynamo teams from Berlin and Dresden, with the Saxons not reaching a league title again until 1989. Carl Zeiss Jena and 1. FC Magdeburg - alongside Dresden the other two top teams of the 1970s - followed in third and fourth place.
Newcomers Hansa Rostock (for the fourth time) and last year’s newcomer Chemie Böhlen had to enter the second-class league. The founding members of the Oberliga Zwickau and Aue also had to tremble for a long time to stay in the league and were able to save themselves on the last two match days. The second climber Stahl Riesa, however, landed in ninth place.

FDGB Cup
The FDGB-Pokal was won again by 1. FC Magdeburg this season . The defending champion defeated BFC Dynamo in the final, which had previously suffered its only season defeat against Magdeburg in the league. It was Magdeburg's sixth cup triumph.
International competitions
As in the previous year, 1. FC Magdeburg reached a European Cup quarter-final. This time the Baník Ostrava cup winners' competition was too strong. Dynamo Dresden also reached the quarter-finals in the Landesmeister Cup and was eliminated there against Austria Wien . In the UEFA Cup , the BFC and Lok Leipzig failed each on their first-round opponents Red Star Belgrade and Arsenal London . The elimination was particularly bitter for the Berliners, who after a 5-2 home win in Belgrade had to accept the 1: 4 through an own goal by Lauck in the 90th minute . Jena made it one round and was defeated by MSV Duisburg . The 1978 Intertoto Cup held before the start of the season took place again without GDR participation.
