← GDR football league 1974/75 | |
The GDR Oberliga 1975/76 was the 27th edition of the top division of the GDR . The SG Dynamo Dresden became champion for the fourth time . The season began on August 23, 1975 and ended on May 15, 1976. Subsequently, all upper division clubs competed again within the DFV-Toto special round .
Before the season
Due to the simultaneous relegation of Hansa Rostock and forward Stralsund in the preseason, the north of the GDR was not represented in the league for the first time since 1957. At the same time, Energie Cottbus, a representative of the Cottbus district, returned to the league.
Season course
Dynamo Dresden won after two third places in a row the fourth championship after 1953, 1971 and 1973. Dynamo was even more dominant than 1973, collected 43 points (one more than three years ago) and scored 70 hits (nine more than 1973). On the 24th matchday the Dresden team secured the title with a 4-0 win over previous runner-up Carl Zeiss Jena. Second came BFC Dynamo, which means that for the first time in three years a team other than Dresden, Magdeburg and Jena was able to place itself in the top three places. The champions of 1974 and 1975 in Magdeburg came in third and thus still in the UEFA Cup. Lokomotive Leipzig was placed behind Magdeburg.
Just like the championship fight, the relegation was decided relatively early. Like two years before, Energie Cottbus could not keep up this time and finished last with only three wins and eight points behind a non-relegation place. Chemie Leipzig also tried in vain and was practically relegated on matchday 24 with four points and 14 goals behind Karl-Marx-Stadt and Forward Frankfurt.
For FC Vorwärts, twelfth place in the table was the worst position since their recovery in 1954. This season indicated a negative development that culminated in relegation in 1978. It was also a disappointing season for Jena. Fifth place is the worst position since 1967. In contrast, Wismut Aue surprised as sixth in the table.
