Athletic career

Dietmar Urbanek played his first league game just a few days after his 21st birthday. In the game of the 24th matchday on May 20, 1970 Dynamo Dresden - Hallescher FC Chemie (3-0) he was substituted for goalkeeper Manfred Kallenbach at the beginning of the second half . Before that, he had played a test match with the B national team for one half. For the 1970/71 season, Dynamo Dresden's second team was promoted to the second-rate GDR league , and Urbanek was named as the first goalkeeper. In fact, Claus Boden , who was two years younger than him, was preferred, and Urbanek was only used in two GDR league games. At the beginning of the second half of the season he was delegated to the league competitor BSG Stahl Riesa . There he played nine of the remaining thirteen point games. In the 1971/72 season Urbanek was the undisputed goalkeeper of Riesa, because he was used in all 26 league games. But since BSG Stahl was relegated, he returned to Dynamo Dresden. There he had to line up in the major league again in 1972/73 behind Claus Boden and came only to one league use. This was his small share of the championship that Dynamo Dresden won that season. Urbanek also played only seven of the second team's 26 GDR league games. In the two following seasons he continued to commute between the Oberliga (1973/74 five missions, 1974/75 four) and the GDR League (twelve or seven point games). Urbanek completed his last season at Dynamo Dresden in 1975/76. Although he was reported as the second goalkeeper for the Oberliga, he was only used in sixteen of the twenty-two GDR league games of the second team. For the 1976/77 season he moved to the GDR league club TSG Gröditz . After six point matches , he was called up for six-month reservist service in the National People's Army and during this time he played for the ASG Vorwärts Dessau army sports club , for which he played four games in the GDR league by April 1977. For the 1977/78 season, Urbanek joined the Lokomotive Dresden football association, which was also represented in the GDR league. The Dresden team won the season and took part in the promotion to the league, but failed there. Urbanek had only participated in four point games and then ended his career as a competitive athlete. Within nine seasons he made 46 league and 58 GDR league appearances.
