Horst Freitag (born November 20, 1930 ; † 2019 ) was a soccer player in the GDR Oberliga in Gera , Aue and Karl-Marx-Stadt and was a member of the GDR national soccer team .

Athletic career

Horst Freitag's youth fell during the Second World War. Friday was 14 when the war ended and there was no opportunity to play organized football. In his hometown of Gera , the SV Gera 04, which was successful before the war, had been smashed, and with the SG Gera-Pforten a difficult new beginning began. When the company sports association Gera-Süd was founded in 1949 instead of the SG Pforten , Freitag, now 19 years old, was one of the soccer players who fought for the championship in the newly created East German top division "Oberliga" . Gera Süd was able to save itself just from relegation with 11th place and was also in the lower ranks in the following years, renamed BSG Motor and BSG Wismut. In 1953 the league could no longer be held, after the 17th and last place Friday had to go with his team to the second-rate GDR league . There, in 1954, the resurgence was narrowly missed, and Friday took this as an opportunity to leave Gera after 90 top division point games in early 1955 in the direction of Aue to the local SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt .

In the second half of the 1954/55 season, Freitag became a regular player and was only not part of the 1955 Cup winning team because he had broken a fibula four days earlier in training. This is one of the reasons why Friday, including the transition round in 1955 (changeover of the football season to the calendar year), was only used in eleven point games for the Wismut team. On March 25, 1956, Friday celebrated his comeback when he was substituted in for Willy Tröger in the championship game at Rotation Babelsberg (2-2) in the second half . With 21 league appearances, Friday then had a significant share in winning the GDR championship for SC Wismut. In 1957 the Auers were able to defend their title, and this time Friday was there in 15 matches.

The year 1957 had another meaning for Freitag. On March 10, 1957, he played his only game with the GDR national team. In the preparatory game for the World Cup qualification against Luxembourg (3-0) he was called up as a right winger. However, since this position was firmly in the hands of Horst Assmy , Friday had no further chance in the national team.

At the end of the 1957 season, Freitag ended his engagement in Aue. During his four-year stay in the Ore Mountains, he made 47 league appearances with 12 goals. He rejoined his former team Wismut Gera, where he played again for one season in the second-rate 1st GDR league. After the disappointing 9th place, Walter took a break at the age of 28 and switched to the fourth-class district division BSG Progress Pößneck for the seasons 1959 and 1960 . There he worked as a player-coach, but did not get any further sense of achievement in places 11 and 12. Then he tried again at SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt in higher regions to gain a foothold. In 1962 he was actually able to celebrate another success with promotion to the top division. At the age of 32, however, he was no longer able to cope with the demands of top-class football, so that he only made three matches in 1962 in Karl-Marx-Stadt. At the end of the 1962/63 season he finally said goodbye to active football. In his overall balance, he had come to 140 league games and 34 goals. According to an announcement by the Uhlstädt-Kirchhaseler Anzeiger from October 30, 2015, Friday lived in Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel .
