Horst Freitag (diplomat)

Horst Freitag (* 1955 in Würzburg ) is a German diplomat and head of the Foreign Service Academy in Berlin. Previously, he was ambassador to South Africa, among other things .

Life

After graduating from high school, Freitag studied law and passed his first state examination in law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1980 and his second state examination in 1984 at the judicial examination offices in Cologne and Düsseldorf .

career

Friday then joined the foreign service and found employment at the embassy in Honduras after completing the career test for the higher service in 1987 . In 1989 he completed his doctorate at the University of Passau after research stays at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a dissertation on the subject of legal protection of the residents of Berlin against sovereign acts of the occupation authorities in accordance with Art. 6 Para. 1 ECHR . He then found employment in the Foreign Office in Bonn , where he was first an employee in the department for fundamental questions of defense and security policy and then personal advisor in the office of the ministers of state. He then became political advisor at the embassy in the United States in 1992 , before being deputy spokesman for the German Foreign Office from 1995 to 1997. In 1997 he was appointed head of the liaison office at the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah .

In 2001 he returned to the Federal Foreign Office, where he was first head of fundamental issues in defense and security policy and then head of the Iraqi special staff before he was finally appointed as the representative for Middle East policy. In 2007 he became a visiting fellow for a year at the Brookings Institution , a Washington, DC- based think tank , and then from 2008 to 2011 Consul General in New York City . In July 2011 he succeeded Dieter W. Haller , who in turn became ambassador to Saudi Arabia , the new ambassador to South Africa . Since 2015 he has been head of the Foreign Service Academy , the Federal Foreign Office's training and further education facility .
