The 1958 season was the ninth season of the GDR league , the second highest division in GDR football . At the end of the season, BSG Chemie Zeitz was promoted to the GDR league for the first time , while BSG Lokomotive Stendal managed to get promoted again immediately after relegation a year ago. The BSG Stahl Stalinstadt and the league relegated from the previous year SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt rose as the bottom of the table in the 2nd GDR league , while the BSG Motor Bautzen was able to remain in the GDR league despite relegation position 12 because the table fourth SC Chemie Halle II was downgraded as a result of the relegation of the 1st team from the GDR Oberliga to the third-class district league .

In a double round with a return game, the promoted to the GDR Oberliga and the relegated to the 2nd GDR League were determined. There were two points for a win and one point for a draw. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. If this was also the same, the goals scored decided on the standings.
