Lothar Neumann (born April 1, 1930 ) is a former German football player who was active in the top division of GDR football , the GDR Oberliga , in 1959 and 1960 for BSG Chemie Zeitz .

Athletic career

The 25-year-old Lothar Neumann belonged to the squad of the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Zeitz, which was one of the teams that competed in the first season of the newly established second-rate GDR league in 1950/51 . Neumann played in the core team of BSG Chemie from the start, because he played 17 of the 18 point games played, scoring eight goals. In the following season he was not part of the regular team, since he was only used in five league games, he only scored one goal. In the seasons from 1952/53 to 1958 (calendar year season) he was again part of the core team of chemists. Of the 154 GDR league games played during this period, he played 144 matches and, with his 56 goals, became one of the most dangerous strikers in BSG Chemie. It was also he who scored the 2-1 winning goal with a pike in the decisive game against Lokomotive Stendal in 1958 and thus made the promotion to the GDR league perfect. In his first league season in 1959, in which he was named team captain, Neumann only missed a point game and scored six goals. In the 1960 season he had to suspend seven point games, including a two-week ban. He came back to four league goals, but had to relegate his team back to the GDR league at the end of the season. In 1961, GDR football was brought back to the summer-spring game rhythm and 39 games had to be played in the GDR league from March 1961 to June 1962. In November 1961 Neumann was drafted for 18 months for military service in the National People's Army . It was not until the 1963/64 season that he returned to BSG Chemie Zeitz, where he played 15 of the 30 point games. Then he was active for two seasons for Zeitz in the GDR league, in which he was still used regularly and also appeared as a goal scorer. When he resigned from competitive sports after the 1965/66 season, he had played 282 championship games in the Oberliga and GDR league from 1950 to 1966 and scored 88 goals. He stayed with BSG Chemie Zeitz as a trainer for many years.
