Edgar Ernst (born August 24, 1934 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper. He played with BSG Chemie Zeitz in 1959 and 1960 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football .

Athletic career

After Edgar Ernst was active as a goalkeeper in Zechau in Altenburger Land up to the age of 17, he moved to the company sports association (BSG) Motor Meuselwitz in the third class state class Thuringia in 1951 . After the restructuring of the GDR soccer leagues, he played with BSG Motor until 1955 in the third-rate Leipzig district league . For the 1956 season (calendar year season) Ernst joined the second-rate GDR league club Chemie Zeitz. There he was intended to be the second goalkeeper next to Lothar Richter , but surpassed this with twelve league games, while Richter only made eleven appearances. In the next two seasons Ernst had to be content with the role of substitute with nine (1957) and eleven (1958) point game participations. In the 1958 season, BSG Chemie was promoted to the GDR league. Although only intended as a second goalkeeper for the top division season in 1959, Ernst moved up as a regular goalkeeper after the fifth match day because Lothar Richter had been injured over the long term. With that, Ernst played 23 of the 26 league games (Richter came on twice as a substitute). Edgar Ernst remained number one in the Zeitzer goal in the following seasons until 1967. In his second league season in 1960 he was in all 26 point games in the gate, then Chemie Zeitz had to relegate back to the GDR league. In the six seasons leading up to his departure, he played 155 of the 185 league games played. During his last two seasons he got competition from goalkeeper Dieter Haarseim , who was seven years his junior and who finally replaced him in 1967. When Edgar Ernst ended his career as a competitive athlete after the 1966/67 season, he was able to show a record of 236 point games, including 49 league games.
