Athletic career

Werner Landmann began his career in high-class football at the age of 23 in the 1952/53 season with the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Zeitz in the second-class GDR league . In the 24 point games was used 14 times. In the following season 1953/54 he had already conquered a regular place with 23 appearances in 26 GDR league games. He was able to maintain this until 1958 (calendar year season), because in these four seasons he was missing only one point game. He was successful as a goalscorer every time, he scored a total of eight goals. In 1958 the Zeitzer rose to the GDR league, Landmann had always been used as a defender in his 25 missions and had scored two goals. BSG Chemie was able to assert itself in the top division for two seasons. In 1959, Landmann was used in all 26 point games, where he was mobilized by coach Werner Wagner in defense, in midfield and in attack. With his five hits, he set a personal goal record. Landmann began his second league year as a striker, but was constantly used as a defender from the sixth match day. Since he was injured several matchdays, he only made 22 appearances and remained without a goal. In 1961, GDR football was changed back to the summer-spring game rhythm. Since Chemie Zeitz was relegated to the GDR league, 39 rounds had to be played there between March 1961 and June 1962. After Landmann was only able to play 16 point games in this season, he was only used in one GDR league game in the 1962/63 season. He was also not called up in the final of the GDR soccer cup , which Zeitz surprisingly achieved as a second division team in 1963, but lost 3-0 to Motor Zwickau . In the summer of 1963, Werner Landmann ended his career as a competitive footballer after having completed 202 championship games and scored thirteen goals in ten seasons in the GDR League and Oberliga.
