Gerhard Handt (born October 3, 1935 ) is a former German soccer player who played for BSG Chemie Zeitz in the GDR Oberliga , the highest league in GDR soccer, in 1959 and 1960 .

Athletic career

With three games in the second-rate GDR league for the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Zeitz, Gerhardt Haupt began his career in higher-class football at the age of 18 in the 1954/55 season. In 1956, GDR football was changed to the rhythm of the calendar year, and Handt was not used in the GDR league that season. After he was only a substitute player in 1957 with only six game appearances, he established himself as a regular in the GDR league team in 1958. With the help of Handts 24 appearances as a midfielder in the 26 played point games, the Zeitzer rose to the GDR league at the end of the season. In his first league year, Handt defended his position as a regular in midfield 23 appearances in the 26 point games. In 1960 he was also regularly called up as a midfielder, but was absent from nine league games due to injury. After this season, the BSG Chemie had to relegate back to the GDR league. Handt played there for the Zeitzer until 1966. Until 1964 he remained a regular player with 78 appearances in 85 played point games. When Chemie Zeitz was a surprising second division team in the final of the GDR soccer cup in 1963 , Handt was called up as a left defender. As expected, he and his team lost 3-0 to the upper division Motor Zwickau . In his last two seasons in the Zeitzer GDR league team, Handt was only a substitute player and only played seven or six league games. After the end of the 1965/66 season, he ended his career as a competitive footballer at the age of 30. Between 1954 and 1966 he had completed 164 championship games for Chemie Zeitz within nine seasons. He did not score goals during this time.
