Werner Bergner (born January 22, 1937 ) is a former German goalkeeper. From 1956 to 1964 he was goalkeeper at Lokomotive Stendal in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

For the 1956 season (calendar year rhythm), 19-year-old Werner Bergner was taken over by the company sports club (BSG) Lokomotive Stendal as the second goalkeeper behind Günter Reh (* 1928) in the league squad. In his first league year Bergner was used nine times in league games, in 1957 there were eleven league games. After the 1957 season, Lok Stendal had to relegate to the GDR league and Reh ended his career. In his place, Horst Falke , three years younger than Bergner, was appointed first goalkeeper by coach Gerhard Gläser . Since Günter Reh was also part of the squad, Bergner only played a point game in the GDR league year 1958. After the immediate resurgence, Lok Stendal played again in the league in 1959, in which Bergner was used four times. The Stendal did not manage to stay up and had to compete in the GDR league again in 1960. In this season Bergner succeeded in replacing Falke as number one in the Stendaler Tor and defended his position in the 1961/62 season, in which Lok Stendal played again in the league. After the return to the autumn-spring rhythm of play, 39 games had to be played in the Oberliga, of which Bergner played 32 matches. His competitor Falke had meanwhile moved to SC Chemie Halle . Lok Stendal remained in the elevator rhythm and in 1962 again relegated to the GDR league. In the GDR league season 1962/63 Bergner lost his regular place with only ten league stakes, which he had to give up to Jürgen Ißleb . While the Stendaler immediately rose again to the league as usual and were able to stay there for a long time, Bergner was no longer able to recapture his regular place in the league team. In the two league series 1963/64 and 1964/65 he came only to seven missions. He then ended his career in high-performance sports at the age of 28.
