Society of Chemical Industry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) is originally a British society for the advancement of industrial and applied chemistry.

Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry

The Society was founded in London in 1881 at a meeting at Burlington House, the seat of the Chemical Society . The first president was the chemist Henry Enfield Roscoe and the founders also included Ludwig Mond , Lowthian Bell , William Henry Perkin , Rudolph Messel , the soap manufacturer Edward Rider Cook (1836–1898), Eustace Carey, Thomas Tyrer, Walter Weldon, Frederick Augustus Abel and George E. Davis . Previously there was an attempt in 1879 to found a chemical society for Lancashire in Liverpool similar to an existing one for the Tyne area (Newcastle upon Tyne Chemical Society), but it was soon clear that the founding of a national society would make more sense. In 1907 the company received Royal Charter . Its headquarters have been in Belgrave Square in London since 1955 . They publish magazines, organize conferences and further training measures, award scholarships and prizes such as the Lampitt Medal and the Distinguished Service Award. There are sub-groups for different branches (Agrisciences, Colloid and Surface Chemistry, Construction Materials, Environment, Health and Safety, Electrochemical Technology, Fine Chemicals).

The journals include the monthly Chemistry & Industry (C & I) and the peer-reviewed journals Biofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining , Energy Science & Engineering , Greenhouse Gases: Science and Technology , published from 1993/94 in collaboration with John Wiley & Sons , Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology (from 1951), Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture (from 1950), Pest Management Science and Polymer International . From 1882 to 1950 they also had a Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry (JSCI), which was superseded by more specialized journals. The in-house journal C&I was created in 1923 from the overviews of new developments at JSCI.

There are separate sub-organizations in the USA (America Section), Canada and Australia. The US company was founded in New York in 1894 and was called America Section from 1919 . They award the Perkin Medal (from 1906) and the Chemical Industry Medal .
