Henry Enfield Roscoe
Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe (born January 7, 1833 in London , † December 18, 1915 in West Horsley ) was a British chemist . It represented metallic vanadium in 1867 .
He was the son of the barrister Henry Roscoe and his wife Maria, daughter of the merchant Thomas Fletcher. Roscoe attended University College in London. After studying in Heidelberg , he worked under Robert Wilhelm Bunsen , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. In 1857 he took over the chair of chemistry at Owens College in Manchester . Important areas of work were photometry ( Bunsen-Roscoe law ) and spectral analysis as well as the chemistry of the transition elements tungsten and vanadium.
In 1863 he married Lucy Potter († 1910), the daughter of Edmund Potter. Beatrix Potter was his niece.
In 1863 he was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which in 1873 awarded him the Royal Medal . In 1874 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1884 he was knighted a Knight Bachelor . In 1882 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1890 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1893 as a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
