geography

Corn poppies on the sheepleas

The Sheepleas Woods are a beech forest with grasslands on the north side of the mountain range known as the North Downs . They are located in the extreme south of the village and cover an area of approximately one square kilometer and are partly an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .

Upper Common is a similarly sized wooded area.

history

Both Horsleys were burned to the ground during the Norman Conquest in 1066 because their Saxon liege, Brixsi, was King Harold's brother-in-law and refused to submit to the Normans. The village was part of the land given to the Norman Walter Fitz Otha, the new constable of Windsor Castle . West Horsley is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Orselei owned by Walter, son of Othere. The assets recorded were 8 hides , 1 church, 8 plows, and grasslands worth 20 pigs . The place paid £ 6 a year to its Lords of the manor .

The Black Death greatly reduced the population and the land was left to graze because the peasant population was insufficient for arable farming.
