West Horsley Place: 15th century structure with a renovated facade in the mid-17th century

West Horsley Place is a Grade I structure in West Horsley , Surrey , England. There are eight other Grade II structures on the property, including a mid-19th century dog kennel.

history

The origins of the building go back. It was built from red brick, and the gallery in the west wing was later converted into additional bedrooms. The house has a total of 50 bedrooms. In the 16th century it belonged to John, Lord Berners , who made the first English translation of Froissart's Chronicles , and later to the Earl of Lincoln . It belonged to Henry Currie in the 19th century , who was Conservative MP for the Guildford constituency from 1847 to 1852 . When future owner Laura Mart Fielder died in 1908, leaving King's College , Cambridge £ 3,000, West Horsley Place was valued at £ 62,536.

In 1931 the property was acquired by Robert Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe and his wife. Crewe died in 1945, his wife Peggy (née Primrose, † 1967) left it to their daughter Mary Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe (1915-2014). This largely closed it off and lived in a five-room area of the house.

When the Duchess died in 2014 at the age of 99, her then eighty-year-old great-nephew, the author and television presenter Bamber Gascoigne , inherited the property. The duchess was childless, but had numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Gascoigne was surprised that his great-aunt would leave him the property. In order to raise funds to restore the somewhat shabby 50-room property, Gascoigne had the Duchess 's property auctioned off by Sotheby's in London and Geneva. The result was £ 8.8 million, four times what was originally expected.
