Erwin Schmidt (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erwin Schmidt (born August 24, 1929 ) was a soccer player at SC Empor Rostock in the GDR upper league .

Erwin Schmidt is one of the group of football players who, in the first few years after the founding of SC Empor Rostock (November 11, 1954), the forerunner of FC Hansa Rostock , strengthened the football team taken over by Empor Lauter . Until 1955 Schmidt played in the fourth-class Rostock district league for BSG Motor Stralsund . With the season 1956 Schmidt was 26 years in the squad of SC Empor and made his league debut on the 4th matchday (April 8, 1956) against SC Turbine Erfurt (1: 1). In his first season he was called up as a replacement for players who were not ready for action, but a year later he became a regular player as a right defender.

His first year in Rostock ended with a disappointment, as the SC Empor had to relegate as bottom of the league at the end of the season. In the following year the immediate resurgence followed, and Empor caused a sensation in the GDR soccer cup . The Rostock defeated in the quarter and semi-finals with activist Brieske-Senftenberg and Vorwärts Berlin (last year's finalist) two league clubs and were thus on December 22, 1957 as the second division in the cup final. Only in the extension of the SC Empor was defeated by the SC Lok Leipzig 1: 2, Schmidt was the right defender in the ranks of the Rostockers. Schmidt and his team reached the cup final a second time. On October 7, 1960, the opponent was called SC Motor Jena , and again the Rostock lost in extra time, this time with 2: 3, and again with Erwin Schmidt on the right defender.

At the beginning of the mammoth season 1961/62, in which 39 point games had to be played due to the change from the calendar year to the autumn-spring rhythm, Schmidt was 31 years old and had passed his performance peak. This season he played again 12 top division matches for SC Empor Rostock and then ended his career as a high-performance athlete.

Rostock career in numbers
