FDGB Cup 1965/66

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 15th competition for the GDR soccer cup took place in the 1965/66 season.

After the preliminary round and the first main round with the 32 GDR league players (second highest football class) and the 30 district cup finalists from the previous season, an intermediate round was held for the first time, for which twelve teams were drawn from the winners of the first main round. In the second main round, the 14 league teams intervened in the cup events. With the Halleschen FC Chemie and Rot-Weiß Erfurt, the first league clubs were eliminated. In addition to the second-rate GDR league team Motor Steinach , Dynamo Schwerin , Vorwärts Cottbus , the third-rate district league team Motor Rudisleben reached the last sixteen , but none of the lower-class teams reached the quarter-finals. There cup defender 1. FC Magdeburg retired after a 0-1 home defeat against Hansa Rostock . The second finalist FC Carl Zeiss Jena had not made it through the round of 16. In the semifinals, Hansa Rostock, the last remaining football club in the competition, was eliminated, so there was a pure company sports community final with Chemie Leipzig and Lok Stendal .

Course of the game

Decision in the 74th minute:

Another blow from the Leipzig half reached the right wing Behla. He crosses up to his center forward Scherbarth, whose failed header falls at the feet of the freestanding Matoul, who pushes the ball flat into the long corner with his outside instep.

The 15th final of the FDGB Cup had reached two teams from the lower table regions. In the not yet finished league season, Chemie Leipzig were on 10th place on the day of the final, Lok Stendal on 12th place in the table. While the Leipziger competed in the traditional 3-2-5 system, the Stendal coach Schwendler played in the modern 4-2-4. The Lok-Elf also set the first accents of the game. After four minutes she had already scored four corners, the midfielders Liebrecht and Strohmeyer showed high fighting commitment, coupled with tactical sophistication. While the Stendal team had good chances to score in a row, Chemie Leipzig could not get out of the defensive work, hasty plays and errors in the game hampered any flow of the game. At the end of the first half, Lok Stendal had a corner ratio of 7: 2, but they failed to exploit the chances. In the second half of the game, the action changed. The people of Leipzig had finally found their rhythm and now seized the initiative. With an urgent game they put the Stendal defense under pressure, within 20 minutes there were three big chances in Leipzig, goalkeeper Zeppmeisel was forced to make brilliant parades. The Leipzig playmakers Bauchspieß and Lisiewicz, who started out cautiously due to injuries, now got off to a flying start and gave their team the constructiveness that was previously missing. While Lok Stendal had not succeeded in his urge period to convert the superiority into scoring successes, the Leipzigers only needed a skilful move to win the cup final.
Manfred Walter (Leipzig): “It was very difficult for us to get into the game. The midfielders from Stendal benefited from our rush. In the second half we were then far more concentrated. "
Gerd Backhaus (Stendal):" We missed a bit of luck, you could also say the serenity needed to score the deserved goal. "(Deutsches Sportecho May 2, 1966)
