Soccer career

Schmidt began his career in the elite class of GDR football at SC Aufbau Magdeburg. After a long run-up, the team from the city of heavy engineering finally made it to the top league. The 21-year-old Helmut Schmidt also belonged to the line-up of SC Aufbau for the first league season in 1960. As a newcomer, the Magdeburg team achieved a secure 7th place at the end of the season. After 9th place in the 1961/62 season, SC Aufbau fell back to 11th place in 1962/63 and only barely saved themselves from relegation. The season hadn't gone optimally for Schmidt either, he had only played 13 of the 26 game matches and had only scored one goal as a right winger. When he was only used three times in league games in the 1963/64 season, Schmidt left the SC structure Magdeburg at the end of the season.

In the summer of 1964 he joined the surprise champion of the previous season at Chemie Leipzig. Between the 1st and 18th matchday, Schmidt was used twelve times as a center forward in the major league, at the end of the season he could no longer withstand the competition from Dieter Scherbarth and Klaus Lisiewicz and was eliminated after only one year at Chemie Leipzig.

The next stop was the upper division Lok Stendal. Here Schmidt was not used regularly in the 1965/66 season but in 17 league point games. He developed into an all-rounder in the Lokelf attack formation, played both outside positions and as a center forward, but only scored four goals.

For the 1966/67 season Helmut Schmidt was again part of the Chemie Leipzig squad. He was in the attack of the chemists from the start and had his regular position in the center of the storm, but only scored two goals. In the following years Schmidt remained one of the most reliable players at Chemie Leipzig, never playing less than 22 league appearances per season. He had his most successful season in 1968/69, when he played all point games and was the team's most successful shooter with seven meetings together with Bernd Bauchspieß . He also played an international match with the B national team in October 1968. Also in his last league season 1970/71, the now 32-year-old Schmidt was used again in 22 point games and was seen in all attacking positions.

Schmidt played his last league point game on the 26th matchday of the 1970/71 season on June 16, 1971 in the encounter 1. FC Magdeburg - Chemie Leipzig (2-1) as a center forward. After that, within twelve years he had played 194 league games, 53 for SC Aufbau Magdeburg, 124 for Chemie Leipzig and 17 for Lok Stendal. In total, he had scored 42 goals. Schmidt then played for another five years with the Berlin team Motor Köpenick , with whom they were promoted to the second-rate GDR league for one season in the first year of 1972 . From 1976 he coached the Berlin district league club Lichtenberg 47 for a few years .
