Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village ( Japanese レ イ ト ン 教授 と 不 思議 な 町 , Reiton-kyōju to Fushigi na Machi ) is a puzzle game released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS. It is the first part of the Professor Layton series . In 2018 the game was released for mobile devices in HD with additional scenes.

action

The player takes on the roles of Professor Layton and Luke, the professor's apprentice, who have been invited to resolve a family dispute in Saint Mystère. It is about the legacy of Baron Augustus Reinhold. In the will of the baron, who died two months ago, it was determined that the person who finds the golden apple should inherit the property.

Gameplay

With the input pen you steer the professor and his apprentice through different sections of the village, always entering a new area, which consists of a drawn background and additional elements such as people and devices. Tapping people starts a conversation. A hint coin or a puzzle is often hidden in suspicious-looking places. The entire game is controlled via the touchscreen , the A key is the only assigned key and, as an alternative to tapping on the touchscreen, continues conversations.

mystery

The puzzles are the actual gameplay of the Professor Layton series, they are provided by people and some gadgets to advance the plot or optionally found in the village and bonus area of the game. Solving the optional puzzles does not affect the plot. By solving the puzzles you get a number of picarats corresponding to the difficulty of the puzzle. These can be used to unlock sections in the bonus area after the action has been completed. The puzzles are usually logic, combination or math problems or puzzles that have been known for many years. If a puzzle seems too difficult, you can unlock up to three clues for each clue coin.

The game contains a total of 135 puzzles, including bonus puzzles, plus optional “Puzzles of the Week”, which were accessible until May 2014 via Wi-Fi via the now discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection .

bonus

After completing the main story, you can unlock bonus material, which is then available in the start menu. This bonus material consists of cut scenes, music and pictures from the game and other, more difficult puzzles.
