Professor Layton and the Call of the Phantom ( Japanese. レ イ ト ン 教授 と 魔神 の 笛 , Reiton-kyōju to Majin no Fue , German "Professor Layton and the Demon Flute") is a video game from Level-5 and the fourth game of the " Professor Layton ”series. Chronologically, it's the first game on the timeline and tells the story of how Professor Layton and Luke met. The Japanese and North American versions also contain a bonus role-playing game called London Life by the developers Brownie Brown , which can be unlocked after completing the main story.

The game was released in Japan on November 26th, 2009 and sold more than 300,000 games in the first week alone.

General

The game includes 170 different puzzles, 52 more are available for download (the number may vary in the German version). You can earn 7000 so-called picarats , which you can later use in the bonus area of the game to unlock various bonuses. To get a clue about a puzzle, you can use the clue coins , 300 of which are hidden in the game. The fourth part also introduced the "'episode system". These episodes can be collected in the game and viewed in the “professor's suitcase”. These are dialogues or scenes that function as a side story or additional information. For example, it clarifies where Layton and Emmy know each other from. Another innovation in the case is the so-called "collection". This is a collection of various objects that are hidden in the whole of Misthallery, the location of the game.

action

Professor Layton and his new assistant, Emmy Altava, receive a letter from Layton's old friend, Clark Triton. He writes of a huge phantom that destroys the village at night. The professor and Emmy head to Misthallery, Clark's home village, to get to the bottom of the mystery there. Misthallery was once home to an ancient civilization that supposedly built a "Golden Garden" in the village. During his investigation, Layton meets Clark's son Luke, who accompanies Layton during the game. He says he sees the end of the world approaching and can predict the location of the phantom. In the village itself there is a rumor about a "catastrophe witch" who allegedly conjures up the phantom with a flute and who has her residence at the huge reservoir. Local inspector Levin Jakes also seems to have secrets. It is up to Layton and his companions to solve the mystery of the "Village of Fog".

characters

  • Hershel Layton - He is professor of archeology at Gressenheller University and an avid puzzle lover. With his new assistant Emmy Altava he tries to solve the mystery of the phantom.
  • Luke Triton - Clarks and Brenda Triton's only son. He understands the language of animals and sees the end of the world approaching. He owns a pet named Toppi. He sent the letter to Professor Layton, calling for help. He is also enthusiastic about puzzles.
  • Emmy Altava - The new assistant to the professor. Her uncle taught her various martial arts and her hallmarks are her yellow scooter and camera.
  • Clark Triton - father of Luke and Layton's old friend. Clark and Professor Layton met while studying archeology. He is the acting mayor of Misthallery.
  • Arianna Barde - the alleged "disaster witch" of the village. She lives alone with her brother Tony and her gardener in the old Bardes residence on the dam. Because of her illness, she rarely leaves the house.
  • Tony Barde - He takes on the role of Seamus.
  • Jean Descole - Layton's new archenemy. He is also an archaeologist and, like Don Paolo, a master of disguise. He seems interested in Misthallery's secrets. In order to achieve his goals, he does not shy away from harming others. He can also be very persuasive and has a good command of attracting others to his side.
  • Inspector Grosky - Scotland Yard's new inspector. He has known Layton for a long time and is investigating the events in Misthallery on behalf of Scotland Yard.
  • Grandma Enygma - You and Emmy meet briefly. Before Layton and Luke enter the room, she disappears. In the game she is also replaced by her cat Kietz, who from now on collects all forgotten puzzles.
  • Jakes - The Misthallery inspector. He's quite stout and doesn't seem very friendly to Layton.
  • Black Raven - The guardian spirit of the " Raven Market " by Misthallery. In the end it turns out that it is a gang of children who run the raven market.
  • Seamus - The unfriendly gardener of the Barde family. He hates visitors and is a kind of protector for Arianna. It later turns out that it was Arianna's little brother who pretended to be Seamus.
  • Dean Delmona - The head of the Gressenheller University. He names Emmy as Layton's assistant.
  • Rosa - The cleaning lady and secretary in Layton's office. Since order isn't exactly the professor's strongest point, it has a lot to do.
  • Doland Noble - The Tritons' butler. He cares for Luke lovingly and has raised him since he was a baby. He and Luke's mother were locked in the Triton family's basement by Jean Desole so that Descole could masquerade as Doland.

Professor Layton's London Life

London Life is a bonus role-playing game that is unlocked after completing the main story. You create your own character and solve the tasks of the residents of London. These are the characters from the first four games and three unlockable characters from the film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva . The graphics are very reminiscent of the game Mother 3 and are supposed to be an allusion to the game called Fantasy Life (published in Japan on December 27, 2012) . The game was developed by Brownie Brown and Level-5 . It is not included in the European version, as the necessary translations would have meant a postponement of the publication that Nintendo did not want to accept.

Soundtrack

The music in the game was composed by Tomohito Nishiura and was released on CD in Japan in 2010. The song that is played during the credits is called Paxmaveiti and was composed, written and sung by Yūko Andō .

Bonus area

In the bonus area of the game you have the opportunity to get 52 downloadable puzzles as well as to solve 15 bonus puzzles, which can be solved by completing the mini-games (fish, doll and miniature train mini-game), completing the main story and solving all puzzles in the game unlocks. In the top-secret area you can watch the small video sequences of the game, as well as artwork and character descriptions. In addition, by entering a password from the fifth part of the series, you have the opportunity to view additional material.
