Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney ( Japanese レ イ ト ン 教授 VS 逆 転 裁判 , Reiton-kyōju VS Gyakuten Saiban ) is a co-produced video game by Capcom and Level-5 , in which the worlds of the Ace Attorney series and the Professor Layton series collide .

The game was released in Japan on November 29, 2012, followed by a release in Europe on March 28, 2014, and in North America on August 29, 2014.

General

The game follows Professor Layton, Luke Triton, Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey as they solve the mystery of Labyrinthia. The gameplay of the Professor Layton series meets the gameplay of the Ace Attorney series, with the different gameplay systems alternating. There are animated film sequences between different game sections, some dialogues in the course of the game are also synchronized. So far, that was only available from Professor Layton, not from Ace Attorney.

The gameplay portion of the Layton franchise consists of exploring the game world, solving puzzles and interacting with characters to get clues on how to solve the great mystery of the game. You can use a magnifying glass to explore the screen to find clue coins that you can redeem to unlock clues for solving puzzles. This scheme, as well as the locomotion scheme, was introduced in Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles . Solving puzzles gives you picarat with which you can unlock bonus content. Depending on how difficult a puzzle is and how often it takes to find the right solution, you get more or less picarat. In the game you can solve 82 puzzles.

As Phoenix Wright you are the witches' advocate in the witch trials . As usual in Ace Attorney, witnesses are cross-examined in order to obtain new information. The main task is to discover inconsistencies in the statements and to uncover them with the help of other statements and evidence. If you present false evidence at the wrong time, you lose one attack ; if you lose three attacks, you lose the process and have to start over. However, with the hint coins collected from the Layton part, you can also get hints on how best to proceed. Another new feature is that you sometimes interrogate several witnesses at the same time, some of whom react to statements made by other witnesses. At the end of the process, depending on how many attacks are left, you get more or fewer picarats to unlock the bonus material.

During the game, the characters in both series of games immerse themselves in the worlds of the other game. Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey have to solve puzzles as the game progresses, while Professor Layton becomes the inquisitor, and thus Wright's opponent in the courtroom, towards the end of the game. The game menu is taken from the Layton games, but the sounds in the menu change depending on whether you are in the courtroom or on a tour of the city.

action

A woman named Sophie de Narrateur is chased through London and asks Professor Layton for help, but before he can solve the puzzle, Sophie is kidnapped. Professor Layton and Luke come across a strange book, and shortly afterwards they wake up without memory in the medieval city of Labyrinthia.

Meanwhile, lawyer Phoenix Wright and his assistant Maya Fey are also in London for a business trip. By chance they also discover the book and, like Professor Layton and Luke, wake up in Labyrinthia with memory loss.

The four characters meet in Labyrinthia and help each other. While Phoenix Wright represents defendants in bizarre witch trials, including Sophie de Narrateur, Professor Layton explores the city to find a solution to the puzzle surrounding Labyrinthia.

Characters

Ace Attorney series

  • Phoenix Wright is an excellent attorney who represents a client who has been charged with witchcraft.
  • Maya Fey is Wright's bold and optimistic assistant who is also a budding medium .

Professor Layton Series

  • Hershel Layton is a famous professor of archeology at Gressenheller University in London and a puzzle lover. This affection has already solved many mysteries and often got his name in newspapers.
  • Luke Triton is Professor Layton's self-proclaimed apprentice and follows him everywhere to aid him in his exploration.

Labyrinthia characters

  • Sophie de Narrateur is a mysterious woman who seeks help from Professor Layton and is later accused of being a witch in Labyrinthia, becoming Wright's client.
  • The creator is the dark ruler of Labyrinthia. Every story he writes comes true in Labyrinthia.
  • Aloysius Flamberg is the local inquisitor. The red-haired knight in iron armor takes on the role of the public prosecutor in court and makes the familiar gestures of many lawyers in the Ace Attorney series. He is very well known in Labyrinthia for this role.
  • Gloria is the city's Grand Inquisitor and therefore Aloysius Flamberg's superior.

Many other well-known characters from both franchises have cameo appearances as the game progresses.

Soundtrack

The music for the game was a collaboration between the two composers Tomohito Nishiura, the composer of the Professor Layton series, and the newcomer Yasumasa Kitagawa. In addition to composing new titles, both arranged new titles for old games. Kitagawa rearranged the titles of the Ace Attorney composer Masakazu Sugimori. Thus, both newly orchestrated titles and completely new titles from both game series are available in the game.

The soundtrack was largely received positively and only criticized because the titles of both game series are so strictly separated in the game and do not overlap enough.

Pre-orderers in Japan received five pieces of music as a bonus with the game. The complete soundtrack was released as a 3-CD set on April 10, 2013 as Layton Kyouju VS Gyakuten Saiban Mahou Ongaku Taizen in Japan. The first CD contains all the tracks from the Professor Layton series, the second all tracks from the Ace Attorney series and the third the music during the animated film sequences.

Bonus and extras

In the bonus area, as with other games in the Professor Layton series, you unlock bonus material with the number of picares you have earned. The bonus material consists of four areas: The first area is a photo gallery, in which explanations can be found for photos of places or people in the game. In the second area you can watch all film sequences of the game again, in the third area you can listen to all pieces of music and in the fourth area you can listen to some dialogues of the game again.

You can also experience a 12-part story in the Extras area by downloading data from the Internet, which takes place one year after the events of the main game. In addition, a special gallery has been added in which, among other things, concept drawings with explanations can be seen.
