In 1952 Bernd Herzog played in the youth of Traktor Magdala. A year later he joined the BSG Turbine Weimar , two years later he switched to the youth team at SC Rotation Leipzig . In 1958, the native Thuringian played his first game in the first team of the sports club. In the championship season 1963/64, the defender and four of his teammates ( Walter , Pacholski , Scherbarth and Behla ) played all 28 competitive games, including two cup games . Two years later, Herzog also won the FDGB Cup with the Leutzsch club . In 1967, the defender ended his career when he was classified by his club president Kobbelt in the absence of coach and team leader as no longer suitable for competitive sports and accepted an offer from his father-in-law to work in his bakery. However, master trainer Alfred Kunze prevailed against his president and persuaded Herzog to have another season during which the baker also worked part-time in the family business. In the following season 1968/69 Bernd Herzog supported the second team of the club, then he ended his career.
