Campbeltown was a whiskey distillery in Campbeltown , Argyll and Bute , Scotland .
The distillery was founded in 1815 by John Mactaggart. It was the second registered distillery in Campbeltown after Hazelburn and the first to be established in the 19th century, and has been called the city's first modern distillery. In 1821 the banker John Beith took over the business. Over the years the distillery changed hands five more times until it was finally closed in 1924. The buildings have meanwhile been demolished. Today there is a car dealership on the former distillery site.
When Alfred Barnard visited the distillery as part of his whiskey tour in 1885, it had an annual production capacity of 60,000 gallons . A 1400 gallon coarse bladder ( wash still ) and a 960 gallon fine blister ( spirit still ) were available. A malt whiskey was produced which was largely sold in Glasgow and Ayrshire .
