Soccer career

Oberliga Stahl Riesa

Schuster began his football career at BSG Motor TuR Übigau , where he last played in the third-class Dresden district league . In 1974 he came to Dynamo Dresden, police sports association and Dresden football focus as part of his military service, and played there in the 2nd team. After the end of the army, Schuster joined the upper division Stahl Riesa in 1975. There the 1.78 m tall and trained machine system fitter was initially deployed in the 2nd team, which played in the second-rate GDR league . He played his first league game on February 14, 1976. At the encounter of the 15th match day of the 1975/76 season Wismut Aue - Stahl Riesa (3-0), he was substituted on in the 67th minute. It was his only league game this season, but he moved up in the following season 1976/77 with 23 league appearances to the regular player in the attack formation. At the end of this season Riesa had to relegate to the GDR league. With 28 point and promotion games and eleven goals, Schuster was one of the decisive players in the immediate resurgence. In the new league season 1978/79 he was used in his 22 point games continuously as a midfielder, and this role he took over in the following years, in which Stahl Riesa was able to assert himself in the league.

Oberliga Dynamo Dresden

At the beginning of 1981 Schuster was delegated back to the league competitor and district rival Dynamo Dresden. Since the Dresdner had to replace three of their regular players shortly afterwards , who had been permanently banned from the league in connection with an attempted “ illegal border crossing ”, Schuster came for the banned defender Matthias Müller immediately at the beginning of the second half of the 1980/81 season in the league team. He played the following twelve point games in the new position of right defender. In the following season 1981/82 he completed 25 of the 26 played point games and stood on May 1, 1982 as a right-back in the winning team of the GDR Cup final , which the Dresdeners won 5-4 on penalties against FC Dynamo from Berlin. Schuster was also involved in the Dresden Cup victories in 1984 and 1985 . The cup final on June 8, 1985 was also his last competitive game in the Dynamo league team. In the 3-2 win again over BFC Dynamo, however, he only played the last five minutes. In his last league season, however, he was still part of the player base, and again completed 19 point games, mainly back to his regular position right defender.

During his nine league seasons, Schuster played a total of 172 point games, 81 for Stahl Riesa (11 goals) and 91 for Dynamo Dresden (2 goals). Of the twelve European Cup games played by the Dynamo team during his time in Dresden, Schuster played six.

After high-performance sport

After Schuster had finished his career as a high-performance athlete, he joined the FSV Lokomotive Dresden for the 1985/86 season , where he played in the district league for three years. He then trained as a waiter, worked for a while in the catering trade with his former teammate Andreas Diebitz , and in 2002 he and his wife set up a restaurant in Dresden-Blasewitz .
