Gernot Alms (born October 7, 1962 in Rostock ) is a former German soccer player. For FC Hansa Rostock he played in the GDR Oberliga and the Bundesliga . In 1991 he was the last GDR champion and cup winner with FC Hansa. Alms is a multiple GDR junior and young national player. His brother Eckardt Alms , who was eight years older than him , also played for Hansa Rostock. Father Rudi Alms was club chairman at FC Hansa from 1975 to 1977.

Soccer career

youth

Gernot Alms was delegated to FC Hansa Rostock by BSG Schiffahrt / Hafen Rostock at the age of ten . In 1980 he was included in the squad of the GDR junior national team and played his first junior international match on September 26, 1980. In the 1-0 win in Bulgaria he was used as a pre-stopper , the position that would also determine his future career. By 1981 Alms had completed a total of 13 international matches with the junior team.

DDR-Oberliga

At FC Hansa he was nominated for the youth league team for the 1980/81 season . There he was only used three times this season, instead he played in the first team for the first time on November 15, 1980. In the GDR league game FC Carl Zeiss Jena - FC Hansa (1-0) he was used as a left defender. By the end of the season, the 1.88 m tall Alms had completed another ten first division games in which he was called up in various defensive positions. For the 1981/82 season he was consequently officially accepted into the GDR Oberliga team. With 25 missions he immediately secured a place in the team and mainly played as a stopper. Until 1984 he was missing only five point games, then he had to pause in the second half of the 1984/85 season because of a torn ligament. Before that, he had played 22 international matches with the youth national team between 1981 and 1984.

1986/87 Alms had to play in the second-rate GDR league after FC Hansa had previously been relegated from the league. With 30 appearances in a total of 34 played point games and with three goals Alms was instrumental in the immediate return to the league. 1987/88 he was again handicapped by injuries and played only eight league games. After that it was the standard Hansa stopper again until 1991. In the 1990/91 season Alms was only missing in one point game, and it was the most successful season of his football career. FC Hansa was the last GDR champions and also won the last GDR Cup final . In the 1-0 final win for the FDGB Cup , Alms was the right defender on the field.

1st and 2nd Bundesliga

With the championship title Rostock had qualified for the Bundesliga season 1991/92. Alms was also able to assert himself in professional football and played 34 of the 38 Bundesliga games. Coach Uwe Reinders had meanwhile converted him to full-back and used him on both the right and left. In the two first round matches for the 1991/92 European Cup against FC Barcelona (0: 3, 1: 0), Alms played as a right defender. Hansa was only able to stay in the 1st Bundesliga for one season. In the 2nd Bundesliga Alms completed two seasons in which he played 27 of 46 in 1992/93 and 17 of 38 games in 1993/94. Alms played his last game as a professional footballer on March 6, 1994 as a left defender for 45 minutes in the match between Wuppertaler SV and FC Hansa (4: 1).

Career end

In the summer of 1994 Alms joined the Mecklenburg regional division Parchimer FC . Together with his former Rostock teammate Juri Schlünz, he helped the Parchimers move up to the amateur league within a year. After his career as a player, Alms became a coach at the lower-class clubs FSV Bentwisch (until 2000), TSG Neustrelitz (until 2003), SG Warnow Papendorf (2004/05) and then at SV Waren 09 .
