Hans-Ulrich "Ulli" Thomale (born December 6, 1944 in Sörnewitz near Meißen ) is a former German football player and coach .

Career as a player

Hans-Ulrich Thomale made the leap into the top division in GDR football as an active player . As a midfielder, he played for Motor Sörnewitz, TSG Meißen , FSV Lokomotive Dresden and BSG Stahl Riesa . In Riesa he played 14 games in the GDR league and scored one goal.

Career as a coach

His career as a coach was more successful in the upper house. In 1971 he started as a junior coach at Halleschen FC Chemie and in 1972 moved to FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Thomale initially trained the FCC junior team , then in 1976 he took over the junior league team . After nine years of work in Jena, Thomale was appointed senior league coach at BSG Wismut Aue in 1981 . There he succeeded in 1985 after a fourth place in the league, the entry into the UEFA Cup . After this successful year, Thomale became the coach of 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . With the Leipzig team he won the FDGB Cup in 1986 after a 5-1 win in the final against 1. FC Union Berlin . The following year Thomale and his team reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup , which the Leipzigers lost in Athens with 0: 1 against Ajax Amsterdam . In 1987 Thomale successfully defended the FDGB Cup with Lok Leipzig, Hansa Rostock was beaten 4-1 in the final. In the GDR championship Thomale was denied the big hit with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, in 1986 and 1988 Lok was runner-up behind the BFC Dynamo.

Thomale coached 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig between 1985 and 1988 in a total of 19 European Cup games and dueled very successfully with coaching legends of European football such as Nils Liedholm (AC Milan), Otto Barić (Rapid Vienna), Aimé Jacquet (Girondins Bordeaux) and Johan Cruyff (Ajax Amsterdam).

During his successful time at Lok, Thomale also formed talented players who were later able to assert themselves in the Bundesliga, such as Olaf Marschall , Jürgen Rische (both Kaiserslautern), Bernd Hobsch (Werder Bremen), Heiko Scholz (Bayer Leverkusen) and Torsten Kracht ( VfL Bochum).

After the reunification, Thomale first tried his luck with clubs from the old federal states. From 1990 to 1992 he was a coach at KSV Hessen Kassel and in 1992 at FC 08 Homburg . From 1993 to 1996 he coached the Austrian club Grazer AK , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1995 and qualified for the UEFA Cup the following year with a 4th place in the table .

In the 1996/97 season Thomale was a coach at KFC Uerdingen 05 and came back to VfB Leipzig for the 1998/99 season after a two-month stint at the Chinese club FC Chengdu . There he was released in April 1999 in second place. In November 1999 Thomale became a coach at VFC Plauen , but missed the leap into the new regional league before joining FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 2001 . Although he could no longer prevent the sporting descent from the regional league there, the club was still able to hold the class due to the license withdrawal for SSV Ulm in 1846 . After an unsuccessful start to the 2001/02 season, Thomale was also dismissed in Erfurt. From February to October 2004 he returned to KSV Hessen Kassel, but was unable to build on his earlier successes.
