history
Kockums in the 19th century
In the 1820s, the Kockum family established themselves as commercial and industrial entrepreneurs in Malmö. Frans Henrik Kockum built a fortune processing tobacco. This gave him the opportunity to set up a machine workshop (Kockums Mekaniska Werkstad) in 1840, which initially mainly produced agricultural equipment, stills, stoves and ovens, and from 1850 also railway wagons. In 1870 a shipyard was added to the workshop. The family also owned a brick factory in Lomma, which later developed into Skånska Cement AB , which was formed in 1871 . Kockums Jernverks AB , founded in 1875, was another company owned by the family. The reason for this was the need for iron in Blekinge and Småland .
Structural change
In the years since the First World War , the Kockum companies have undergone a structural change. Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads AB in Malmö concentrated on the production of vehicles, railway wagons and bridges, while Kockums Jernverk (mainly operating in Kallinge and Ronneby ) specialized in steel, steel products, galvanized and enamelled goods. Among other things, Kockums built the first court train for the Shah of Persia in 1935 . The shipyard and the bridge building company expanded rapidly after the First World War. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Malmö shipyard had grown into one of the largest in the world, mainly producing large cargo ships. In parallel with their production, a shipping company was also operated. After the acquisition of AB Landsverk in 1948, the other mechanical engineering companies also developed with Kockums Mekaniska Verkstad.
Expansion, decline and change of ownership
The expansion continued until the mid-1970s, when other companies, such as Kockums Jernverk, had economic problems that were subsequently liquidated or sold. Kockums Mekaniska Verkstads AB (since 1977 Kockums AB) also began to restructure their activities, but as a result of the poor earnings and future prospects, the company was taken over by the state-owned Svenska Varv AB in 1979 . After civil shipbuilding was shut down in 1987, only military ships were built. In 1989, Kockums AB merged with Karlskronavarvet AB under its own name . In 1999 the ownership rights went to the German HDW group. Kockum's use of new technology in the last year has proven to be successful, for example within underwater technology and in the development of vehicles for sound camouflage. The Kockums company had sales of around SEK 1.5 billion in 2002/2003 and had 1,200 employees in Sweden. From 2005 to 2014 Kockums belonged to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems , a subsidiary of the Thyssen Krupp group.
The sale to Saab took place in July 2014.
