The Kockumskranen ( Swedish. Kockumskranen ) was a 138 meter high portal crane with a load capacity of 1500 tons from the Kockums shipyard in Malmö . The Kockum crane, which was built in 1973/1974 and dismantled in the summer of 2002, was not only one of the largest cranes in the world, but also a symbol of Malmö.

Shortly after completion, the shipyard was affected by an economic downturn, so that the crane could hardly be used. It was last used in 1997 to lift and move the foundations for the Øresund Bridge . The decision to sell the crane was made in the early 1990s, but the Danish buyer Burmeister & Wain went bankrupt. Eventually the crane was sold to Hyundai Heavy Industries for $ 1 and shipped to Ulsan , South Korea . Since many of Malmö's residents cried when their landmark was removed, the management of the Hyundai shipyard decided to name the crane at the new location “Tears of Malmö”.
