Svenska Varv AB was a state-owned joint - stock company in Sweden that was created in 1977 to consolidate the Swedish shipbuilding industry, which was in dire straits.

Shipyard association

The shipyard association combined in Svenska Varv initially consisted of the previously private and independent companies Götaverken (with Finnboda ), Uddevallavarvet and Karlskronavarvet . Eriksberg , Kockums and Öresundsvarvet were subsequently added. With the gradual takeover of these large Swedish shipyards, a fundamental restructuring and operational closure began. Eriksberg and Lindholmen was closed almost immediately. The Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona with its 1,800 jobs was shut down in 1981, while Götaverken and Kockums continued to operate until the late 1980s, albeit with a steady reduction in their workforce. The large Uddevalla shipyard was also closed in connection with the termination of state financial aid for shipbuilding in 1986.

Conversion to an armaments factory

In 1987, after most of the shipyards were sold or closed, the company changed its name to Celsius Industrier AB and became an armaments company. Celsius was merged with Försvarets Fabriksverk , a manufacturer of ammunition and other military supplies , in 1991 and was partially acquired by Nobel Industrier AB, which was formed in 1984 through the merger of Bofors and KemaNobel.

privatization

In 1993 Celsius was floated on the stock exchange; the state retained a minority stake of around 25 percent. In 1995 the company name was shortened to Celsius AB. In February 2000, Saab acquired Celsius AB, and with it its daughter Bofors . The heavy weapons division (cannons, etc.) was sold to United Defense Industries in Arlington , Virginia in September 2000 . Only the guided missile business remained with Saab and is now run under the current name Saab Bofors Dynamics .
