The VfL 06 Saalfeld was created in 1906 under the name FV Saalfeld from 1906 (later also VfL 06 Saalfeld ). On a sporting level, the club played without exception in the East Thuringia Gau until 1945 , any participation in the finals for the Central German Championship or Gauliga Mitte did not take place.

The club was dissolved in 1945 and re-established as SG Saalfeld in 1946 . The loose sports group was renamed when Carl Zeiss joined the company as a sponsoring company, initially optics Saalfeld and mechanics Saalfeld (both 1950), and from 1951 renamed Motor Saalfeld . On a sporting level, Motor Saalfeld became a founding member of the third-rate district league Gera in the 1952/53 season , which was held with brief interruptions until 1977. In 1986, the company sports association , renamed Carl Zeiss Saalfeld again in 1984, returned briefly to Gera district league football, but narrowly failed at Dynamo Gera .

The greatest success in the club's history was winning the Gera District Cup in 1958, in which Saalfeld was able to win 3-2 against Chemie Kahla . In the associated qualification for the FDGB Cup in 1959 , the Saalfelder first prevailed against Motor Gotha , but were subsequently defeated by Dynamo Erfurt , the representative of the 2nd GDR League , with 1: 2. In the period that followed, the Thuringians were unable to return to higher-class GDR football.

In 1990 the club initially acted as SV Carl Zeiss , but returned to its historic name VfL 06 Saalfeld in 1991 . Since then, VfL has been operating exclusively in the East Thuringian local area. After three years of membership in the regional class east, the Saalfeld relegated to the eight-class regional class in the 2010/11 season, which played in 2012/13 under the name "Kreisoberliga Mittelthüringen".

Fusion to form FC Saalfeld

As early as the 2013/14 season, the men's teams of FC Lokomotive Saalfeld (previously regional class) and VfL Saalfeld (previously regional upper league Central Thuringia) formed the FC Lokomotive Saalfeld syndicate. The first team took over the playing rights from Lok, the second from VfL. The FC Saalfeld was founded on January 14, 2014 and on May 27, 2014, retroactively to May 15, 2014, was accepted into the State Sports Association of Thuringia. In 2016, FC Saalfeld was promoted to the national class.
